Payton started acting as member of the Queensland Youth Ensembles' Youth Ensemble where she had the opportunity to learn from many great Australian directors, teachers and actors including Wesley Enoch, Jason Klarwein, Travis Dowling, Andrea Moore and Amy Ingram. The Youth Ensemble challenged Payton to tackle plays such as Macbeth, The Importance of Being Earnest, War Crimes as well as dance and musical numbers. Above and beyond the Youth Ensemble gave Payton the confidence to begin her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drama) at 15 as part of the Queensland University of Technology's Start Program.
Payton also holds an Associates of Occupational Studies Acting from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Here she was able to expand and learn from teachers such as Barbara Rubin, Burke Pearson, Sheila Bandyopadhyay and Thomas Rene. As well as, directors such as Michael Bradshaw Flynn on Teddy Farrara, Lester Shane on As You Like It and Daniel Winerman on Blast Radius.
This year Payton had the honor of working on MIXED a collaborative performance directed by Lili Alice Walker Stiefel and is completing her play “Her’s, Whore’s and Theirs”.
is a Jersey raised poet who believes in the power of the voice to cultivate radical change. Believing that we all are made up of necessary stories, she spends her time teaching others about the importance of using their voice and body as a source of activism. She is the two time Grand Slam Champion of Montclair State University Slam team, whose team has placed in the top ten for the last two years in the ACUI College Slam International Competition. She was featured at venues like the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, the Bowery, and has been published on SlamFind and Nylon Magazine. Nelly’s work revolves around taking back space that is often stolen. Her writing reflects issues surrounding black womanhood, queerness, mental health, sex positiveness, and body positivity. She has used her passion of restorative work through writing and presented at conferences like Yeah That’s What She Said, The Black Girl Project Sisterhood Summit, and Hot 97 radio podcast Street Soldiers. Nelly believes in the power of art to educate and build stronger communities. In pursuit of this mission, she has created and facilitated writing programs in New Jersey like L.O.U.D (Living. Our. Ultimate. Dreams) and FreeWrite for young people to use their voices as change agents in their community. Nelly believes in creating an outlet where students can make the stage and each other a safe supportive place to express themselves. Nelly is currently a writing mentor at Urban Word, and has received her masters in teaching to create accessibility to literacy for all students.
